Ranoulf and Randulf werre twins who thought together approximately 200 years ago against the undead that plagued the land. Randulf was a great magician. Ranoulf wielded a bastard sword which slayed undead in a single blow. However, the blade had a curse. Should it slay one other than an undead then that corpse would rise the next night as an undead. Together they forced the undead back into their subterranean liar and trapped them inside with their evil Sovereign.
Legend says that two years later the twins had grown lazy and out of practice having no undead to fight. They both fell in love with a beautiful village girl and each vied for her heart. When she choose Randulf, Ranoulf went into a great rage and slayed Randulf with his bastard sword. Full of remorse who carried the body away from the village to a secret location. He couldn't bring himself to slay his brother for a second time, but knew he would rise as an undead if he didn't. So he buried his twin and left his sword as a cross over the place of burial. Legend has it that the power of the sword has kept the corpse trapped beneath it, and will do for all eternity.
